Reflection

After you complete this activity with your students, take some time to reflect on and answer the following questions.

• How did each pair of learners do with using solution fluency to help each other?

• Do they have a deeper understanding of how the six Ds apply to success in life?

• What were the most challenging areas of this exercise for them?

• What did students learn about what it’s like to help others achieve their goals?

Master Media

Learners are passionate about a great many things, and they have a heightened awareness of the world due in large part to the connective technologies they transparently use every day. Smartphones, tablets, and personal computers are part of their repertoire, and each one provides instantaneous access to the sum of human knowledge, as well as a means for them to create and share knowledge and experiences of their own through avenues such as social media. These tools and technologies make it easier than ever for them to share what’s important to them with the widest audience possible. The question is, What do they want to say and how?

To that end, ensuring students possess strong media fluency fulfills a number of needs, such as the following.

• They develop critical-thinking capacity.

• They can better identify target markets.

• They can recognize bias and misinformation.

• They hone their ability to distribute personalized media messages.

In the following activity section, I explore just a few effective ideas for lessons you can teach on media fluency.
